Selection and Confirmation as a Donor
It is quite a subjective process, as potential intended parents usually look for a woman, to become an egg donor for them, whose physical characteristics and ethic background would be similar, or at least close to theirs. In addition, they may be looking for a donor, with some special educational degree, career backgrounds, life experience, or with some unusual feature. No one can say, when you will be chosen as a donor, and if you will ever be chosen, it may happen in a week, in a month, in three months, in a year, or later after you have applied to the surrogacy agency and completed all the application forms.
In case if you are chosen by any intended parents, you will be immediately called up by the agency’s worker, in order to notify you about their interest in you, and to reconfirm you availability and your wish to become an egg donor. The agency worker will also provide you with all the necessary information about the fertility clinic, in which the egg donation process will be conducted, location.
Screening
In case if you become chosen by any intended parents as an egg donor, you will have to follow the whole protocol of the medical facility, which the intended parents choose as well.
As a rule all surrogacy agencies contact with you in order to appoint your meeting with medical facility. During this meeting, a kind of an interview will be held with you, you will be asked about your health, about your and your family’s medical history. You will also be explained more detailed about what kinds or drugs you will have to take and when. Most medical facilities will demand from you to have a psychological test (MMPI) taken and your meeting with a mental health professional, who has to discuss all the emotional problems, involved into the egg donation procedure. It is necessary to take the above mentioned tests in order to appraise your health and for sexually transmitted diseases, like HIV, or some infectious diseases, like hepatitis, etc. the interview and all the tests will be free for you. If you have taken all the tests, and they show that you are completely healthy, you will be able to begin the very egg donation procedure. This procedure will take about three months.
Fertility Drugs and Monitoring
It is normal, that a woman’s ovaries usually release one egg per cycle during the ovulation. In order to get more than one egg from a donor’s ovaries, there is a necessity for the woman, donating her eggs to take some special kinds of fertility drugs for about two weeks. As a rule these medicines are in the form of injections of Lupron, Pergonal, Metrodin and Humegon. One or some combination of the abovementioned fertility drugs you will have to receive daily. You will also have to have blood tests, and ultrasounds made every day in order doctors could see when the ovulation begins. As a rule all the abovementioned medicine does not cause any side effect, but there are cases, when women may suffer from bloating, ovaries enlargement or ovarian cysts.
Egg Retrieval / Transfer
When your eggs become mature, you will be made an HCG injection in order to activate your ovulation process. The maturity of eggs will be seen by your doctor with the help of daily blood tests’ and ultrasounds’ results. in about 36 hours after the injection, you will have your eggs retrieved from you with the help of a transvaginal ultrasound. This operation is conducted without any general anesthesia, only some kind of a mild sedative mean is used in order to provide your relaxation. The very procedure of egg retrieval is not considered to be painful, and it usually lasts no more than half an hour.
Compensation
After you have served as an egg donor you will receive a honorarium of approximately $5000 – 5500 for your time, spend, effort, inconvenience and personal expense.
