Abandoned Cycle. It is a stage of the In Vitro Fertilization, where a treatment cycle is cancelled before embryo is transferred, and after commencing the administration of drugs.
Adjusted Live Birth Rate. This term means the live birth rate (the number or births rate for every 100 treatment cycles), which has been adjusted to take an account of all the types of patients, who are treated in the clinic during one year.
Amniocenesis is the method, applying which the fetal cells, taken from the amniotic fluid, which surrounds the fetus in the uterus during the 15th and the 16th pregnancy weeks are examined. The cells of a fetus are taken and the genetic make – up is determined. This method allows revealing such development anomalies, like Down’s syndrome, the reason of which is chromosomal abnormalities.
Artificial Insemination (AI) is placing husband’s sperm into th uterus of a surrogate mother at the fertile time of the cycle of her.
Assisted Hatching Autosomal. It is the chemical, laser or mechanical breaching of the gelationous coatings of the eggs.
Autosomal Dominant Disorders. These are the kinds of disorders, in which the inheritance of a mutation from only one of the parents (or arising anew during egg or sperm formation) is possibly to be sufficient for the person to be affected. The most important dominant disorders are familial hypercholosterolaemia, Huntington’s Disease, adult polycystic kidney disease or familial adenomatous polyposis colli (known as colon cancer).
Autosomal Recessive Disorders. These are kinds of disorders, in which for the person to be affected the inheritance of a mutation is to be from both parents, who are unaffected as a rule, because they have only a single copy of the mutant gene. All the recessive Disorders usually have been acquired from the childhood and they include: cystic fibrosis, sickle cell diseases, thalassaemia.
Buserelin. It is a hormone suppressant. It is released in the form of a nasal spray or an injection and it is to be taken daily by a patient. Buserelin suppresses the activity of the pituitary gland. This is a small gland in the brain. This gland stimulates ovaries in order they would produce eggs. This is the kind of an artificial stimulation of the ovaries.
Cervical Mucus is the secretions, which surrounds the cervical canal. The amount and the texture of it changes during the ovulation process thus, allowing the sperm to penetrate.
Chromosomes are small bodies; they are present in the nucleus of every cell in our organism. Chromosomes contain the genes.
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is the method, applying which small samples of placental tissue is being removed, beginning with the 9th and up to the 11th weeks of an embryo’s development. The tissue removed is tested for the presence or absence of any genetic abnormality.
Clinical Pregnancy is pregnancy with an embryo / embryos, whose heart / hearts is / are beating.
Clinical Pregnancy Rate is the proportion of pregnancies with embryos, whose hearts are beating for every 100 treatment cycles commenced.
Cloning is the process of production of individuals, who are completely identical from the point of view of genes, i.e. they share the same set of nuclear gene.
Clones are the result of the process of cloning. These are organisms, which are identical genetically, they share the same set of nuclear gene to each other.
Congenital Malformations, Deformations, Diseases, etc. are the deformations, diseases or malformations, which are present at birth or show themselves soon after birth. These kinds of diseases are usually transmitted directly from the parents.
Congenital Abnormalities are those diseases and development violations, which a baby has from the very birth or soon after the birth.
Consent is the agreement of a donor woman to conduct the procedure of donation. A donor is to give her consent before the beginning of any procedure, and before she agrees, she is to be fully informed and counselled. Giving consent means completing and signing a form, which is supplied by the HFEA to the clinic.
Informed Consent is the agreement to use and keep the eggs and embryos, which are made from these eggs.
Valid Consent is the donor’s agreement to conduct the procedure of the egg collection.  Any type of consent can be changed: withdrawn or varied at any time, before the usage of the embryo.
Counselling is the procedure, which is aimed at the giving the patient a possibility to understand all the treatment implications. It is also provides emotional support and help, if there is any problem, concerning the treatment.
Cryopreservation is the freezing and storage of embryos, spermatozoa and oocytes.
Cytoplasm is the material, which is situated between the nucleus and the surface of any cell.
