Methods of Egg Collection Several methods are considered to be available to conduct the egg collection. To these methods belong vaginal ultrasound guided egg collection, abdominal ultrasound egg collection and laparoscopy.
Vaginal ultrasound guided egg collection This is the most widespread and usual method of egg collection. It is a minor and quite a safe surgery, which may be performed either under sedation, which is safe and acceptable way to provide pain relief for the time, needed to collect egg; or general anesthetic technique may also be applied.
The very procedure of egg collection involves the insertion of a vaginal ultrasound probe with a tiny hollow needle being attached to its end into the egg donor’s vagina. This needle is advanced from the vaginal wall right into the ovary in order to provide the suction of fluid from the egg containing follicle. Each egg is being removed though the needle with the help of a special suction device. The whole procedure is conducted under ultrasound guidance. Under normal circumstances the whole procedure does not take longer than half an hour. It should also be noted, that the follicle flushing is not associated either with any improvement in pregnancy rates or with the number of collected eggs, it only increases the duration of the egg collection procedure and it may also be associated with additional feeling of pain.
Moreover, the egg donor may also be experiencing some feeling of discomfort during the procedure, in case if sedation is used, however, this is usually relieved with the help of painkillers. In order to prevent infection, antibiotic is usually given.
Abdominal ultrasound guided egg collection This technique of egg collection is rare enough. The abdominal egg collection may be prescribed for those egg donors, who have an abnormal ovaries location. The very procedure is performed by passing a thin needle into the ovaries through the abdominal wall. Everything is conducted under ultrasound guidance.
Laparoscopy Years ago all the eggs collection procedure were conducted with the help of laparoscope. However, nowadays this method of egg collection is rarely applied, because general anesthetic is necessary, and there are some certain risks of laparoscopy.
What can a woman experience after the egg collection procedure? Pain The egg donor may feel pain; however, it is not unusual for women to experience some pain in the lower abdomen and in the pelvic areas. In order to reduce pain, a hot bottle or some painkiller may be used. However, if the pain is severe and of a persistent character, it is necessary to apply to the doctor for help. Bleeding It is possible that the egg donor will have to wear panty liners for a couple of days after the egg collection procedure. There may be some minimal bleeding of dark red or brown colour. However, if bleeding is severe and / or of a bright red colour, it is necessary to apply to the doctor for help. Nausea and vomiting The egg donor may experience some nausea and / or vomiting during the first day after the egg collection procedure. As a rule it occurs because of the given drugs – either because of anesthetics or painkillers. However, if the feeling of nausea and vomiting is or a persistent character, it is necessary to apply to the doctor for help. Activities The egg donor should take a rest during the first 24 hours after the egg collection procedure; and the woman may in no case operate any machinery, like cooker, washing machine, car, etc. In addition, at least one responsible adult is to be available to provide care after the women during the abovementioned period of time.
