Traditional Versus Gestational Surrogacy

Compare two types of surrogacy, learn their main advantages and disadvantages.
Traditional Versus Gestational Surrogacy
Traditional surrogacy is conducted with the help of the artificial insemination procedure, during which the surrogate mother’s egg and another man’s sperm are used; while Gestational surrogacy is performed with the help of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedure, where fertilized eggs of another woman get implanted into the surrogate mother’s uterus. A woman, who is going to become a surrogate mother and perspective intended parents will have to choose the type of surrogacy first of all, as all the coming journey depends on this choice of their. Many people use Traditional surrogacy, as it used to be the only way for infertile couples to use a surrogate, because the very Artificial Insemination procedure is quite painless, easy to perform and it is much less expensive than the IVF procedure. Besides, while working with a surrogate, whose fertility has been proved, the success rate is high enough, and the rebound time after a failed attempt is a matter of weeks, and in the Gestational surrogacy, where IVF is applied it may take up to several months.

The Artificial Insemination procedure may be performed in two ways. There is Intra – Uterine Insemination and Intra – Cervical Insemination available. The choice of insemination depends on the quality of sperm, if the sperm is fresh or frozen, and personal preferences of the patient.
• Intra – Uterine Insemination (IUS) is actually the very method, we all picture to ourselves, while talking or thinking about Artificial Insemination in general. The semen by the cervix is deposited with the help of a small catheter.
• Intra – Cervical Insemination (ICI) procedure is only performed with washed sperm, this is how the semen, that was sent through a centrifuge and spun until the seminal fluid gets completely removed from the sperm, and there are only strongest spermatozoids, which are more likely to develop into fetuses, survive after such a “torture”. After everything, mentioned above the sperm is inserted into the surrogate mother’s uterus through a catheter, which is threaded along the cervix into the uterus. This kind of Insemination may be even done in home conditions, which allows more privacy to the surrogate mother, although very few women risk doing it at home and without any doctor’s assistance.

Actually, women, who become traditional surrogate mothers do not have to use any special medicines, they only keep track of their menstrual cycle and the time of the time when they naturally ovulate in order to conduct the insemination. Although there are cases, but they are rare enough, when perspective intended parents and surrogate mothers do use some mild fertility drugs, such as Clomid, which would fine – tune the ovulation time or increase the chances to get pregnant with twins. But in case if the perspective surrogate mother does not accept any medications, she is quite able to pinpoint when she is most likely to ovulate in order the insemination would coincide with the ovulation process. This can be possibly done with the help of the Basal Body Temperature charting, cervical mucous watching, and ovulation predictors or fertility monitors using, and / or with the ultrasound, done in the clinic.
